Karaite Jewish Studies

In a world where religious knowledge is often fragmented, simplified, or shaped by later traditions, the Karaite Jewish University (KJU) exists to address a clear and growing need: a serious, structured, and academically sound institution dedicated to Karaite Judaism and the direct study of the Hebrew Scriptures (Miqra).

Why the KJU Is Needed

Karaite Judaism is one of the oldest scriptural traditions within Judaism, grounded exclusively in the Hebrew Bible and its plain, contextual meaning (peshat). Yet despite its historical depth and contemporary relevance, Karaite knowledge has often been transmitted informally, unevenly, or without an academic framework accessible to a global audience.

The KJU was established to preserve this heritage and ensure its responsible transmission. It provides:

  • Systematic teaching instead of fragmented self-study

  • Academic structure instead of ad-hoc learning

  • Text-based scholarship independent of rabbinic authority

  • Continuity and preservation of Karaite theology, law, and history

In addition, the KJU operates under the authorization of the Council of Sages of Universal Karaite Judaism, the body recognized by the State of Israel in matters of Karaite personal status. This ensures both academic seriousness and religious legitimacy.

In short, the KJU exists so that Karaite Judaism is not merely remembered—but studied, understood, and carried forward with integrity.

Who the KJU Is For

The KJU serves a diverse but clearly defined audience:

  • Karaite Jews seeking deeper knowledge of their tradition, language, calendar, law, and theology

  • Rabbinic Jews interested in formal affiliation with Karaite Judaism

  • Prospective converts wishing to study Judaism according to Karaite practice

  • Academically interested individuals—scholars, students, and researchers in theology, religious studies, and history

  • Serious learners worldwide who seek a rational, text-centered approach to the Hebrew Bible

What unites these groups is a shared commitment to learning grounded in scripture, reason, and responsibility.

A Global Academic Home for Karaite Jewish Studies

With students and scholars from different countries and backgrounds, the KJU also serves as a platform for international exchange and collaboration. Through live classes, structured modules, examinations, and academic writing, students do not simply consume information—they actively engage with texts, teachers, and one another.

The Karaite Jewish University stands for preservation, education, and connection. It exists because Karaite Judaism deserves a dedicated academic home—and because knowledge, when transmitted responsibly, ensures continuity for generations to come.
